The Dobermann Pinscher is truly one of the latest creations of man as far as dog breeds are concerned. Unfortunately, how the engineering was done was not well documented. As such, there has been no clear agreement as to the various breeds that made it possible to bring about this magnificent breed.

There was, however, a majority who gave the credit to the development to Herr Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman who was a dogcatcher, night police officer, and tax collector from Apolda in Germany. Combined with his serious interest in dog breeding, he attempted and successfully brought about the beginnings of a new breed that he believed would be the super guard and ultimate utility dog.

Various breeds were said to have been used to create the Doberman as we know it today. The German Shepherd dog, the smooth-haired pointer, the Great Dane, and the smooth-haired Pinscher, were all said to have played a part in the genetic makeup of the Doberman. There were infusions of Rottweiler and greyhound blood too. Despite this apparent confusion as to the real ancestry, it cannot be denied that the outcome as it stands today, just over 120 years from its early beginnings is indeed a fusion of beauty and function.
